If you’ve read my post about diving into Harry Potter for the first time, you know I’ve been on a bit of a nostalgic reading streak — catching up on iconic books that defined an entire generation. I only watched the Harry Potter movies once years ago, but when the new sprayed-edge editions came out, I decided it was finally time to read the books and experience the magic for myself. I read books 1–4, then watched the corresponding movies, and I totally understood why so many people grew up obsessed. The world-building, the heart; it felt timeless.
So naturally, when Twilight was picked as our JaxBookBabes Book Club read for September, I thought, Why not? Another chance to be part of a fandom I missed in my teenage years.
I went in open-minded, ready for some guilty-pleasure reading. I mean, vampires, small-town romance, forbidden love: what’s not to love, right?
Well… I’ll just say it: I didn’t enjoy it.
Main Characters

Publisher’s Summary
About three things I was certain.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him, and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood.
And Third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife, between desire and danger.
Deeply sensuous and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

My Review
It wasn’t the dramatic romance I expected. The pacing felt slow, the dialogue awkward, and Bella’s inner thoughts — oh, the endless inner thoughts—had me struggling to stay interested. It was too YA for me. I can see how it captured teenage hearts back in the day, but as an adult reader now, it just didn’t hit the same.
Reading Twilight made me realize something, though — there’s a kind of magic in finally picking up these cultural touchstones, even if they don’t become personal favorites. I might not have fallen in love with Edward and Bella, but I understand why the series became such a phenomenon. It was moody, intense, and full of that dramatic “us against the world” love that defined an era.
So, no — I won’t be finishing the series. But I am glad I read it, if only to see what all the hype was about, finally and to join in the book club discussion.
If Harry Potter made me nostalgic for the magic I missed growing up, Twilight reminded me that not every book needs to be a personal favorite to be worth experiencing. Sometimes, it’s enough just to read it, talk about it, and move on to the next adventure — preferably one that doesn’t sparkle in the sunlight.
PS. I wish the movies had included Alice’s story.

And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…
he murmured. I looked away, hiding my eyes as I thrilled to the word.
“What a stupid lamb,” I sighed.

Even more, I had never meant to love him. One thing I truly knew – knew it in the pit of my stomach, in the center of my bones, knew it from the crown of my head to the soles of my feet, knew it deep in my empty chest – was how love gave someone the power to break you

Twilight, again. Another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end

I decided as long as I’m going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.
